With age comes wisdom, right?
That old adage might be true, but sometimes you just want the wisdom without all the extra signs of aging. While there might not be a serum or lotion that completely prevents age spots and wrinkles yet, there are some common practices you could avoid to help slow the process:
Sleeping on old, dirty or rough pillowcases
Sleeping on your side, while comfortable, can result in premature aging. The consistent pressure on your face can result in wrinkles, puffy eyes and clogged pores. Find a set of soft pillowcases that are breathable, allergy-resistant and gentle on skin.
Not drinking enough water
You’ve likely heard this one before, but water is one of the most important factors in caring for your skin. While drinking your daily recommended dose won’t magically erase existing wrinkles, it will help with dark circles and increase your skin’s elasticity — which could prevent wrinkles.
Going overboard with the face masks
We all love a good face mask — especially after a long day. But using face masks too often, or wearing them for too long, can have unintended consequences. A study by Allure found that wearing a sheet mask longer than 20 minutes or so can actually have the opposite effect of what the mask claims to do. In fact, wearing any kind of mask — including mud, clay, or others — can irritate and ultimately age your skin.
Rubbing your eyes too much
The skin around your eyes is one of the most sensitive spots on your body, and being too rough with it can lead to spots and wrinkles. Dermatologists recommend being extra careful when applying and removing makeup or moisturizer around the eyes. When washing your face, use a gentle cleanser and avoid scrubbing with harsh towels.
Spending too much time in the sun
A recent study shows UV rays are responsible for about 80 percent of visible aging signs, including wrinkles and pigmentation. Now, you don’t have become a social shut in to avoid the sun’s harmful rays, but you should be aware of them. Protect your skin by wearing sunscreen, hats and sunglasses whenever possible.
Neglecting your moisturizer
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, applying a moisturizer each and every day actually “traps water in our skin, giving it a more youthful appearance.” Find one hydrating moisturizer to apply at night, and one with SPF to wear during the day to also prevent sun spots, wrinkles and skin cancer.
